Understanding Home Invasion and How to Secure your Home

As an increasing trend in crime, Home Invasion is usually defined as the unauthorized and forceful entry into a dwelling. In almost all case of home invasion the intent has always been robbery. It’s frightening once a home invader suddenly pulls a weapon and robs you on the spot this is after they have impersonated a repairman, delivery boy or even the police.

In some worst case scenario the intention can be torture, kidnapping, rape or even terrorism. In such cases the armed invader takes the victim by surprise mostly by bursting through the window or kicking down the door. In some case the intruder can be motivated by the desire to acquire valuable private information such as your bank account number or your credit card, which they may either sell or use for fraudulent purposes.

Statistically the numbers of reported Home Invasion figures are not available, however it’s estimated that annually, robbery accounts for 11% of all incidents of theft within the United States.

But the real question is how do you protect your family?

In understanding the best method to use in protecting you and your family one must understand the methods commonly used by Home Invaders.  In most cases the invader usually uses the front door, or in the case of a surprise attack they may choose to enter through the garage. Nearly all invasions occur simply by the intruder knocking or ringing the bell and the homeowner opening the door. In such cases the attacker can be swift or violent; while in others the intruder may pretend to be someone you could ordinarily trust.

Common Scenarios

A uniformed individual tells you that they have some sort of delivery for you or your home; this is usually a telegram, flowers or a package or he seeks to repair one or two issues related to the cable, gas leak or the telephone. In such case once the individual is allowed to enter the house he or she reveals his or her true purpose by abruptly pulling out a weapon and starts to violently issue orders.

A stranger suddenly appears in your front door claiming to be in some kind of distress and requests to use your phone or washroom. Suddenly, the worst happens. Once let in he or she pulls out a weapon.

In such scenarios the best technics of defense is adequate preparation. Hence it’s important to realize that electric, telephone, gas and cable lines are inspected or checked from outside. If the person insists on entering your house and you are suspicious of that person’s credentials then it is advisable not to open the door but to phone the company for confirmation or verification.

In cases where you are being requested for assistance or some form of charity always use your better judgment. Look out for any suspicious signs such as the presence of any large van or truck as they are usually a pickup mechanism used to carry your valuables or stuff.

However, preparation only is not enough. One must design ways and methods they may use to prevent any form of home intrusion from happening. Such prevention techniques can be;

Outfit your door with peep hole or bolts and chain that can prevent forceful entry into one’s residence. In the same regard make it mandatory that all repairmen and delivery individuals identify themselves using authenticated identification cards with valid photos of themselves. If you’re not certain of their identity ask them to wait as you call the company to request for verification. If the company denies their presence, call the police immediately.

All in all, if the unfortunate occurs and they manage to enter into your residence it’s advisable to comply with their request in order to prevent any form of physical violent that could result into bodily harm.
